Your Guide to the Sausalito Ferry

Everything You Need to Know About Traveling by the Sausalito Ferry.

There’s no better way to travel between Marin County and San Francisco than the Sausalito Ferry! With a terminal located in sunny Sausalito, the Blue and Gold Fleet ferry system will transport you straight to San Francisco’s Pier 41.

History

In operation since the 1860s, the Sausalito Ferry was originally owned and maintained by the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company before being purchased a decade later by the North Pacific Coast Railroad. Starting in 1922, the famous Eureka ferryboat transported both people and automobiles. While the service was discontinued in 1941, it saw a resurgence in August of 1970 as the city experienced a population boom and the need for easy travel skyrocketed. An updated dock was built at the terminal in 1996, and the Ferry has been transporting happy customers ever since!

Where Does the Ferry Go?

Today, the Blue and Gold Fleet operates 19 different vessels. Upon arriving in Sausalito, you’ll be dropped off at the Gabrielson Park terminal close to downtown. In addition to transportation between San Francisco and Sausalito, the ferries also provide Bay Cruise Adventures—the perfect sightseeing experience. Passengers can even tour Alcatraz Island! For regular transport, ferries can be used to get to Tiburon, Angel Island, Vallejo, Alameda or Oakland, Harbor Bay, and South San Francisco.

You may also choose to travel by the Golden Gate Sausalito Ferry. This service sails directly to San Francisco’s Ferry Building.

When Does the Ferry Run?

Ferry service varies based on the season, so be sure to check the posted schedule before making any travel plans. Times will be unpredictable on weekends and holidays, and the ferry does not run on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

How Long Is the Trip?

For a weekend trip to San Francisco, plan on the journey taking about 30 minutes. Weekday travel can be up to an hour as the ferry makes multiple stops—more time to enjoy beautiful views of the bay!
